Process Paper:
Our group chose the topic of penicillin because we found it interesting and we didn’t know much about it so decided to learn more. We started with the topic of medicine, but then we were told that it would be better if we narrowed it down and chose one, so we picked one of the very popular ones. The invention of penicillin relates to the theme of ‘A Turning Point in history’ because when penicillin was created, many lives started to be saved and more people made it through illnesses.
We conducted our research by using multiple available search engines. To find our sources, we went through many different websites to find the accurate ones. We also acquired some websites with books on them. Our group did most of the research at our school library, but we also did some of it at home. In order to organize for our project so that we would all have it, we made a document and shared it with each other and put our information that we had found on it. We also got together after school and did more research on penicillin together as a group.
When it came to deciding on the category to use we all came to the decision of doing a website for multiple reasons. A website was the most convenient for our group because we all live on separate parts of the town and it was going to be hard to get together all the time and work on the project, so we had to find something that we could share online together. We also thought that since penicillin had a lot to do with research and technology, that a website conveyed this topic the best.
In 1928, Alexander Fleming invented the now very popular medicine penicillin through a series of testing and observations using hard work and determinable all just because he was interested in helping people. Our topic relates to this years theme ‘Turning Points in History’ because the invention of penicillin caused a huge change in the world. From him observing a clean spot on his dirty dishes to him starting to experiment with more and more things all the way to the invention of a medicine that helped save many lives. Penicillin was a complicating invention and it took a lot of patience from Alexander Fleming and the few people that helped him out. In the time before it was invented deaths due to sickness and diseases were rising and when this medication was made, peoples lives were being saved all the time. This medicine was probably one of the most important inventions altogether. Throughout the world, there have probably been hundreds, thousands, possibly even millions of turning points. Without these turning points in our history, who knows where we would be today.
